Subject: [*] 500 Cards v0.9.3
500_Cards version 0.9.3 - This release replaces all previous versions.
500_Cards pits you and your computer partner against an all computer
partnership in that favourite ol' card game; 500 - first team to 500 wins
(or first to -500 looses!). I'll avoid making any grand promises about the
computer players abilities - they're okay but can/will be improved. The
card-table window fits snuggly on a 9" monitor though more recent macs get
the advantage of colour!
New in this release:
* Added a LEVEL menu which allows you to select how 'confident' the computer
players are. There are four levels: Safe, Brave, Reckless & Frenzied. The
default is Safe and previous versions played just to the brave side of
safe.
* Computer player bidding is (re)balanced to get them away from going no trumps
all-the-time. (I think I've finally got the balance about right, comments?)
* Reworked the main event loop to speed up the computer players. Much Better.
* Fixed a couple of graphics and GUI consistency problems.
* Edited the ReadMe! file using SimpleText - if you don't have it then get the
new Hardware System Update (version 3) from Apple. (NOT me!)
The good news - I've tested this game on a Classic, a Colour Classic and a
LC475 (all running Syst7) and the thing works just fine. Macs running
System 6 (but with _WaitNextEvent) should also be fine.
The better news - I've fixed the problem with PowerMacs (heck - it looked like
8bit colour to me but 16bit+ colour offworlds need more memory than the game
has). 500 runs fine on at least a 6100, though you could mistakenly think
the computer players are playing Snap! given how fast they throw down their
cards!!! (Hmm, I might have to slow the game down for the PowerMacs...)

A Crowning Guide to Castles: Siege & Conquest
Version 1.0 May 1994
Please direct all comments and additional tactics and strategies to
"poulee@cs.uh.edu".
This guide is written presuming players are playing the "Impossible" level with
"Geographic" product distribution. Hence if one comprehends the winning
approaches elucidated in this guide, one should have less trouble applying them
in the lesser playing levels. Another assumption is that players are
role-playing the Valois ruler.
Introduction
CS&C is an excellent strategy game that has tremendous play and replay values
through the many carefully and splendidly accomplished implementation of game
elements. Computer City sells it for $39.95 versus $49.94 in Software Etc in
Houston.
This player has played as the Valois King, Yoyoboy, to be declared King of
Bretagne by The Pope in the month of January, in the year 1819 after the death
and resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ, with the rating Emperor (points
above 12000) in the Impossible level. The following is an excursion of the fine
points King Yoyoboy has gleaned through those tumultuous years of intense
administrative, diplomatic and military maneuvering.
General recommendations:
0. 1 to 4 combined Infantry and archer will cost 1 gold and 1 food to maintain.
5 - 9: 2 of each. 1 to 4 knights will cost 2 gold and 2 food to maintain. 5 -
9: each. IMHO, this is the result of the "round-up" algorithm used and a glitch
since 5 I/A units should still cost 1 instead of 2 gold/food.
1. Save game often.
2. Use "Save as..." to create saved games of different names every year or two.
This allows one to restart from games dated not long but long enough ago in
cases of terrible decisions or strategies that have doomed one's current game.

Subject: [*] Delete MerryXmas; HyperCard Merry Xmass info and killer
About This Document
------------------
This document contains information on
* the Delete MerryXmas stack
* the MerryXmas virus
* how to use Delete MerryXmas
* freeware legal information
* contacting the author
What is Delete MerryXmas?
------------------------
Delete MerryXmas 1.0 is a HyperCard stack that will check your
stacks for the MerryXmas HyperCard virus. It can also install
protection into your Home stack to detect and remove the
MerryXmas virus automatically. Most (if not all) virus
protection programs cannot detect this virus.
What is the MerryXmas Virus?
---------------------------
The MerryXmas virus infects stack scripts, starting with the
Home stack, and any other stacks that you open thereafter. The
virus infects HyperCard (and possibly SuperCard) stacks
*only*. It does not infect any other files on your hard disk.
How to Use Delete MerryXmas
--------------------------
Delete MerryXmas 1.0.2 requires HyperCard version 2.1 or later,
and at least as much free disk space as the size of the
largest stack to be checked.
1. Double-click the Delete MerryXmas stack to open it.
The stack immediately disinfects your Home stack, to
avoid errors from an existing MerryXmas virus infection.
2. Click the Add... button.
To add whole folders or hard disk volumes, hold down
the Option key as you click the Add... button.
Repeat step 2 to add stacks from more than one location.
3. Select the stacks you want to optimize.
4. Click Start.
A grey bar shows the stack's progress through the list
of stacks. When all stacks have been checked, a report
appears.
5. Click Save.
A dialog box appears for you to name the report. Click
the Save button (or press the Return key).
6. Click Done.
To stop the optimization at any time, click the Stop button.
After confirming your action, Delete MerryXmas will stop
checking stacks in the list, leaving the remaining stacks
untouched. (At certain times, the Stop button is dimmed and
the current process cannot be canceled.)
Scripter's Note
--------------
If you enjoy scripting in HyperCard as much as I do, you're
probably quite likely to end up wanting to take it apart.
A word of warning: Delete MerryXmas has been designed to work
best in its original, *locked* state, so please tinker with an
unlocked *copy* only. Also, unlocking Delete MerryXmas may
result in its being infected, so please keep it locked.

Subject: [*] demo - StoneTable; List manager dropin replacement
Contains an application which demonstrates the functionality of
StoneTable. Also contains a feature list and ordering information.
StoneTable is a replacement library for the List Manager and is
available for use with Think C, Think Pascal, MPW C, MPW Pascal,
and CodeWarrior C. Conversion from the List Manager is straight
forward because StoneTable contains functions with similar names
and parameters that are semantically equivalent. Often conversion
is as simple as changing the prefix of a function name from L to
TMX_ (e.g. LNew becomes TMX_New). StoneTable is royality free for
applications.
Functionality includes (partial list):
- variable width columns/height rows
- mouse down handling provides an optional interface for moving,
copying, selecting, resize a column or row plus scrolling and
editing text in a cell/title
- columns and rows can have titles
- the formatting (font, size, style, first line visible) and
for/background color of cells can vary from cell to cell and
for the title area as a whole
- application defined LDEF like drawing module
- sort columns or rows. The key type may be text, case insensitive
text, numeric text, date text, or time text.
- user written cell validation functions

Subject: [*] Disk Charmer 1.4.7; Prevents writing w/out password
Disk Charmer 1.4.7 lets you initialize (or verify) floppy disks.
It *requires* System 4.3, and runs comfortably under System 6.x.
It is able to create larger disks: you gain 8.5K on a 800K disk,
18.5K on a HD disk (if you keep one large file filling the disk,
such as a Compact Pro or StuffIt segment).
It has a "proprietary" bad sector lock out algorithm.
Enjoy yourself and remember the $10 shareware fee!
(To the moderators: do not remove this version from the archives,
because the newer versions - 2.x - no more work under System 6)

FaberFinder is Yet Another MiniFinder.
Has "a lot" of features, though it is only 3K (the power of

FaberFinder 4.1 and later should **not** need the 128k ROMs
(Mac Plus or later Macs).
It works (at least) on my old, faithful Mac Plus under System 1.1,
2.0, 4.0, 4.3, 6.0.2, 6.0.8; you can use it under System 7.0

FaberFinder may be useful for emergency disks, where space is
at a premium.

Subject: [*] fracppc10b1.hqx; Mandelbrot Set Generator for PPC
This is the first beta version (1.0b1) of FracPPC, an
application I am writing to generate fractals on Power Macs.
Currently it is little more than a toy program: it won't allow
fractal pictures to be copied to the clipboard or saved to PICT
files, for instance. The major restriction presently is: it
doesn't allow the color palette to be edited. But it is a good
example of the speed with which fractals (in the case the
Mandelbrot set) can be generated on the PowerPC.
This version can ONLY run on Power Macs -- it will not run on

Subject: [*] Hex Keyboard
I was editing a document recently and had to insert a large number
of characters which weren't part of the Apple standard repertoire.
I had code tables printed out and realized in a flash the solution
to my problem: entry via hex address.
The Hex Keyboard is based on the standard US System 7 keyboard,
but new option-keys have been added. It's simple to use: type
<option-4> and press <e> and the character at 4E will appear;
<option-f> and <7> yields F7; and so on. The keyboard works with
Caps Lock on or off. To install it, drag it into your System Folder.
If you think this is a godsend (as I did), I'd be glad to accept
a shareware fee of $5.

Subject: [*] LifeMaker 2.1 Cellular Automata Program
LifeMaker 2.1 is a cellular automata program for color Macs. Cellular
automata (CA) can be thought of as mini-universes. The universe starts at
some initial state and evolves according to a simple local rule. ConwayUs
Game of Life is by far the best known CA. LifeMaker includes ConwayUs Life
along with 32 other rules. Unlike most Life programs LifeMaker uses color,
allows you to change the size of the RuniverseS, and lets you create your
own rules. LifeMaker requires 32 Bit QuickDraw when used with System 6.
2.1 Changes:
1) Fixed a silly bug that caused crashes on some machines when LifeMaker
started up.
2) Fixed a bug that caused Undo Eraser to crash occasionally.
3) Flushes the data cache after compiling a rule so LifeMaker works reliably
on '040 machines.
4) Added support for recording the CA as a QuickTime movie.
5) Added balloon help to all of the menus and most of the dialogs.
6) Added HighLife rule.

Subject: [*] MacHTTP 1.3
Attached is version 1.3 of MacHTTP, the WWW server for Macs. This version
of MacHTTP contains some substantial enhancements over previous versions.
New features include:
AppleScript and AppleEvent support
- MacHTTP now ships with the runtime portions of AppleScript, making
scripting available to all users. The AppleScript extensions distributed
with MacHTTP are for use with MacHTTP and cannot be copied to or used on
other machines without MacHTTP.
- MacHTTP is now fully scriptable and recordable. Use AppleScript to view
MacHTTP's dictionary for more details.
- Several new AppleEvents have been added to allow MacHTTP to be monitored
and configured from a remote workstation.
User Interface Enhancements
- Text can be copied from the status window using normal copy and paste
functions.
- MacHTTP now logs information on file sizes and displays a running total
of bytes transmitted since the server was launched.
New Functions
- MacHTTP now supports "multi-threaded" transfers for TEXT and BINARY
files. This means that MacHTTP now transfers multiple files simultaneously
to more than one client.
- PIG_DELAY and DUMP_BUF_SIZE commands have been added to the config file
to allow users to fine tune MacHTTP's behavior for use over slow networks
connections or on busy Macs.
- A VERSION command was added to MacHTTP for use in the config file. This
ensures that MacHTTP's config file matches the version of the software
being run.
Bug Fixes
- Spurious transmission of CR/LF at the end of some binary files has been
removed. This should correct problems with sending some types of files to
Windows and Mac clients.
- MacHTTP can now correctly launch aliases to applications.

Subject : Macintosh Models List (mac/misc/documentation/macfactstwo940516.txt)
mac.archive.umich.edu and other archive sites:
This is an update to /mac/misc/documentation/macfactstwo94mmdd.txt
Please replace the following in your archive with this file.
Dear Readers:
Here is an update to the Macintosh Models List (AKA Mac Facts II).
About this file:
This is the Macintosh Models List (AKA Mac Facts II). It is a list
of all the Apple Macintosh models, past, present, and future. The list
provides as much information on each model that can fit on two lines.
The attached Model List III has old Speedometer 3.11 speed ratings.
I am looking for someone to update and maintain ML III. I may just drop the
speed ratings soon (ML III).
Requested information:
1. I would like to find out whether the internal speaker plays mixed, left,
or right mono for all the models. Look in the second table, Internal ports,
Speaker. If the entry for your machine is -, I need the information.
If you want to help, please let me know if the internal speaker plays mixed,
left, or right mono. I may consider making a stereo test sound available
someday.
2. I need more information on SCSI speeds for the newer models. Look in the
second table, Internal ports, SCSI. If you have this information, please
email me.
3. What is the overall speed of the new macintoshes? Classic = 1.0.
Two column format:
There are now two tables per model so that each model has two lines of
information. Note that I still stick to the 80 column wide format for easy
viewing on terminal screens. You may choose to print it out on Unix using
enscript -2rl or format it in a word processor as two columns so that the
lines match up.
Please email any corrections or additions to jdsb@ee.egr.duke.edu.

[
Dear Mac Archivers,
Hope the following will be of use to all those people who can't open
the Midi Files they've downloaded. You'll probably want to put
this in Utilities, but you might put a link to it in the Sound
directory.
]
Midi Typer is a drag-and-drop utility requiring System 7.0 or greater. It
convinces your system that all those MIDI files you downloaded (or
bought) really are MIDI files. It is smart enough to automatically
distinguish between real MIDI files and Text files (such as "Read Me"
documentation), so you can just drop the icon of a folder or disk on
Midi Typer, and it will do the rest. You can also use Midi Typer to
change the application that will open your Midi Files.

New Features
- PowerPC support
Morph now contains native morphing code for machines equiped with a PowerPC
chip. Performance is approximately 2-4 times faster than on a Quadra 605
(25MHz LC040).
- Faster morphing
The morphing routine has been optimized to increase performance on all
machines. Morphing is 50-100% faster than version 2.0.
Bug Fixes
- When creating a document from scratch, if the morph image window cannot
be made the dimensions of the first image loaded (due to insufficient
memory) the image will be 80x80 pixels (instead of 1x1 in 2.0).
- Memory management has been improved to handle larger images better as
well as low memory situations.
- The Tool Palette is now correctly displayed during low memory conditions
or when a Hewlett Packard DeskWriter printer driver is chosen.

Subject: [*] Notebook Maker; Convert text into stand alone application
Hi,
Please find attached NoteBook Maker. The standard blurb follows:
Notebook Maker
This application will allow you to take a standard Macintosh TEXT file of
data, and create a stand-alone 'Notebook' application which includes that
information in an easy to browse and search format. Notebook applications
are designed so that you can easily distribute list based information to
other Macintosh users. The low memory requirements mean that it is
especially useful in lab situations where you can have lists of do's and
dont's, helpful hints and so on.
Once the Notebook application has been created, you can use Notebook Maker
to add and delete topic entries, or remove and attach graphics to
individual topics.
Notebook Maker can also create 'Command Set' files for use with the
application 'Commander' (of use to 4th Dimension developers only).

Right On Time is a personal time manager. It features a calendar, to-do
list, reminders (alarms), and even a menubar clock. It supports repeating
events, categories, digitized sound alarms, the new Speech Manager, and
more.
Right On Time contains the most-used features of commercial applications
such as Now Up To Date, First Things First, DateBook, etc., yet is very
easy to use, much smaller (both in disk space and RAM), does not require
any system extensions, and costs much less. If you are at all interested
in the various personal time managers, check this one out! Find out why
MacUser magazine said "Right On Time, which combines a calendar and an
event list, is probably the most elegant shareware to-do-list program
available right now" (Jan. 1994 issue).
Version 2.6 adds many new features and fixes some minor bugs. This version
is limited to 5 events, but is otherwise fully functional. The unlimited
version is shareware, $15.

Subject: [*] SetupPartitions 1.0.3; Hard partition Apple SC disks
SetupPartitions is a neat utility that lets you create more
than one Macintosh partition on a hard disk formatted with
Apple HD SC Setup.
It _requires_ at least System 6.0.4 to run.
SetupPartitions lets you use true, "hard" partitions
(as opposed to "soft" partitions).
Quadra AV users will particularly appreciate SetupPartitions:
in fact, it seems that the only driver exploiting the new
awesome hardware capabilities of the AVs is the Apple one.
So you want to format with Apple HD SC Setup.
Since these days hard disks are pretty huge, you also want
to partition. So you want SetupPartitions.
No major code changes from 1.0.1, only a couple of fixes in
the registration code; user interface adjustments &
improved documentation.
Enjoy yourself and remember the US$10 shareware fee!

Tiggr's Clock 1.0, for AfterDark
A friend of mine, called Tiggr, originally wrote this rather nice clock for his
NeXT machine. So he deserves the credit. This clock is an arc ranging from the
hour-hand to the minute-hand. I didn't look into Tiggr's source, but I figure
that with Display PostScript the code was much neater that mine, I use Regions
to create smooth drawing (instead of off-screen drawing) and the code is just
like a plate of spaghetti...
I contribute this module to Lloyd Wood, if it wasn't for him, I would have left
my compiler alone today...
Anyways, have fun! This is shareware.

Timekeeper 3.1 from The PandaWare Company is an easy-to-use HyperCard-based
time tracking application. This new version offers an improved interface
over earlier versions.
PandaWare Timekeeper is for anybody who charges clients for their time. It
lets you keep track of projects you've worked on for different clients, and
how much you're charging them for each activity you perform on a project.
It offers extensive reporting, exporting and printing capabilities. Here
are some of the useful features you'll find:
* Lets you track time down to the tenth- or quarter-hour
(your choice)
* A virtually infinite number of clients, projects and
activities are accessible with a mouse click
* Lets you assign hourly rates to any activity
* Automatically sums your time and charges on every project
* Automatically creates summary reports for any project
* Automatically creates daily timesheet reports
* Data entry is easy -- just select items from lists
* Lets you customize the data you record on each project
* Lets you export data on projects to database, spreadsheet or
other applications for incorporation into your own billing
system
There are many other features waiting for you to discover. This Timekeeper
3.1 demo offers every function available in the full working version. It
tracks up to seven projects for up to 20 days.

Description follows
---------
UUParser 1.72 is now avaialble. This is a major upgrade to version 1.71,
with many fixes, and additional features.
UUParser is one of the easiest to use file strippers and
uuencoders/uudecoders available for the Mac. It support several different
encoding methods (mac->unix, unix->mac, AIFF->ULAW, AIFF->Linear), and is
the fastest decoder avaialbe for the Macintosh. It can operate fully in
the background (for unattended encoding/decoding of several files), and
lots more!
Here are some things you may want to know about UUParser:
UUParser 1.72 & 1.8 features
% Automatic stripping of header information from files "S"aved
from a usenet newsgroup.
% "Smart" uudecoding. Fully user configurable.
% uuencoding of AIFF (sound) files is now supported.
% uuencoding/decoding in PC, UNIX, and AIFF formats.
% User control over output file location.
% Join multiple text files for UUParsing & automatic decoding, from
the menu OR the Finder.
% Split any text file into multiple parts using the Split File function.
% User configurable preferences.
% Automatic scan of text files for anomalies.
% Drag & Drop supported via System 7.
% Parsing/uudecoding/encoding occurs in the background.
% Decodes/encodes/parses/splits/joins ANY SIZE FILE, regardless of memory!
% The FASTEST uudecoding/encoding available for the Mac!
% Many other new features added, with updated documentation!
*Version 1.72 is now the sharware version until further notice.

Subject: [*] Word StdFile Color Icon Patch; Add color icons to file dialog
Here's a quick patch I put together for Microsoft Word 5.1a after I
got the new Apple System Update 3.0 for System 7.1. All this patch
does is adds 'dctb' resources to the Word application for the
Standard File Open and Save dialog boxes that Word uses.
I don't like patching my applications, but after seeing the cool new
small color icons in the Standard File dialogs, I had to have them
in Word! Since this worked so well, I decided to package it up and
share it with the rest of the world. The patch application was made
with ResCompare and a separate ResEdit file with just the new
resources is also included for those so inclined.
Complete documentation is enclosed. This software can be used and

Would someone kindly clarify the situation.

First, to clarify: Adobe Garamond is a Type 1 PostScript typeface, not
TrueType. In fact, Adobe does not sell ANY TrueType fonts.

First, call Adobe and get an upgrade to ATM 3.6 Version 2.0.3 doesn't
like Apple's new Fonts folder and the update may cause the Mac to stop
looking for fonts in the Extensions folder. Second, LaserWriter 7.0 is
fundamentally wonky, and should have been replaced by a later version,
such as 7.1.x by the System 7 Pro installer. You may even want to
consider LaserWriter/PSPrinter 8.1.1
Another possibility is that your font may have gotten broken somewhere in
the process. reinstall both screen and printer fonts from the original
disk and see if it gets better.

Well, I can't tell you whether or not the software will work with your CD
Rom (NEC's, for instance, seem to require a special driver), but I can
confirm the Centris Problems.
I have a Centris650 16/230, and have always had to install the CD Rom
software manually...the installer has never worked properly for me. If you do
this, make sure that you remove ALL vestiges of the old CD-Rom driver, as
it may crash the machine. This includes foreign file system parts and
all...they have compacted the software and it includes fewer extensions.
What a pain. By the way, the latest Cd-Rom software from Apple is 5.0.1
Has any other Centris user had problems with the installer?

Subject: Laserwriter NT Repair
I have done EXACTLY what you ask (I think...)
Here's the scoop:
There is a big black plastic piece kind of on top with three screws in it.
These screws are phillips, and are easy to get to. When I first examined
the printer, it looks like the plastic part is actually part of a bigger
assembly, but it is not. You must completely remove the three screws, this
piece will come out, and you can get to your label.
I tried to take more of the printer apart, and let me tell you: It's
impossible to do without more information... I have taken apart Mac Plus',
SE's, SE/30's, a million (ok, maybe not a MILLION) Mac II's, monitors,
keyboards (got stumped by the adjustable), the Pro 810, the Pro 630 etc.
and have never (except for the adjustable keyboard) been stumped like I was
with the NT. There are a million screws and tabs etc.
However, I recently aquired the service source CD, which has diagrams etc.
of this printer. I haven't tried to take one apart yet with their
directions, but they seem to be pretty complete... If you need to do more,
let me know and I'll try to help.
Let me know if this helps!

Subject: NisusWriter 4.0
Hello !
I saw a posting a few days ago asking about the new version of
Nisus. I got that version a while ago for Beta testing and I think it might
be a good idea to share some of the new features with info-mac users. Note
that this is a partial list of the features I found, I haven't worked with
the package enough time to find everything since the version I got is too
buggy (for my taste).
The first thing you'll notice is that it requires more memory. This
fat application (3.1MB of disk space - but that's probably because it's a
debugging version) must have a large 3.5MB minimum partition to load, and
since the tables and equations are done by external modules expect the
memory demand to go even higher (600K for the tables maker for example). I
think this means no more LCII 4/80 equipped people working on Nisus (and
this is the common case here). As to speed, I didn't check that but on my
950 it seems quite like the Old version speed.
At first site, everything is now in a cool 3D look. The window has
been rearranged a bit - on the upper part there's only control on the ruler
settings, while the "show rulers" moved down to the lower left corner of
the document. On that corner you can also find an icon that pops up the
whole "show" sub-menu and another one that pops up the "set clipboard"
sub-menu, making the clipboard switching much more useful. Besides that
there's also an icon that enables you to switch between editing the
document, the headers/footers and the footnotes. The top of the vertical
scroll bar is still used for working modes. You have the info bar, the
regular ruler mode, the graphical layer, the page layout and the all new
multimedia layer (which I will explain later).
The menus changed a lot. There's no "Format" menu - instead some of
the features moved to the "Tools" menu and the others, along with some new
options, were gathered into an "Insert" menu. I think all the dialog boxes
changed - all the model DBs are still model, but they now have a title-bar
that can be used to move them around the screen. Most of the DBs have been
rearranged and the global idea is that it looks much better.
Most noticeable new menu features:
* The File menu has an "Open Special" sub-menu that stores the last
recently used files and some user definable files ("Essential Files"). A
"Mail" sub-menu is also there to support AOCE (didn't try it, though).
* The Edit menu now has a "Publish & Subscribe" sub-menu (which wasn't
there is the regular Nisus edition we had) which supports all the regular
options. A convert sub-menu has been added to allow all the Lower/Upper
case conversions you might want.
The "Tools" and the new "Insert" menu (formally "Format") has
changed much. It seems (IMHO) that the options are now arranged much better
(like the fact that "Synch. Scroll" is now under the Windows sub-menu
rather than the Editing).
* The index and contents are now found under sub-menus in the Tools menu.
The contents hasn't changed much, but the index has many new features,
including HyperLinks which allows you to jump to the right place in the
text from the index.
* The Macros sub-menu has new "Do Frontier" command. The company claims
that AppleScript support is on its' way, too.
* The Display sub-menu now has a DB for editing all the window display
attributes and also line numbering formats.
* The insert sub-menu has a "Table" and "Equations" options. The tables are
generated by Tycho, which is a real excellent table maker. The Equations
are done with MathType which is, IMHO, one of the best of its' kind. Both
are supplied with Nisus. The insertion is in the OLE-like format: The menu
option launches the application, you edit the object and when you close the
window it is automatically inserted into the document. The next time you'll
double-click the object, the application will launch again and a window
containing the object will open so you can edit the object. Again, when you
close the window the object will be automatically updated in the document.
As I said before, this feature requires another applications to
run, so it will consume more memory. This object embedding technology is
nice, but it seems that a built-in tables option would be more comfortable.
On the other hand, Tycho runs circles around the tables in Word, for
example.
* The insert menu also has "QuickTime" option. Also the insertion of
graphics into the text layer is now called "Character Graphic" to avoid the
confusions between graphic insertion into the graphic layer and graphic
insertion into the text layer.
* A whole new numbering sub-menu has been added. The numbering is for
chapters, sections, subsections, sub-subsections, Figures, Tables,
Equations and 6 more user definable. In order to create a new number you
choose Insert->Numbering->the type of numbers you want. All types of
numbers are configureable so you can change the title, units and everything
else there is to change. It seems that they've done an excellent work on
this one.
* The insert date, time and document name are all under a "Variable"
sub-menu with the date/time format setting.
* The Style menu now has a Format sub-menu that includes formats which are
not styles like "Keep in the same line" and "Reverse". There's also a
"Gloss" option that let's you add a small super-script copy of the selected
text. The Format option is also added to the Style Sheets - enabling
formats like "Keep on the same page", "Contents" and "Hyphenate".
* The Graphics menu now has a nudging and Grid options.
The most noticeable graphic option is color. You can select a color
for lines and fills. There's also a new object overlapping options like -
add, subtract and blend.
There's a new "Sound" layer which is used for voice annotations and
speech (requires MacinTalk). When you record a sound it appears as a small
icon in the text. When you're in the sound bar mode you can still edit
text. The sound bar has the following options:
* A pop-up menu for global sound set and the sound that is currently
selected. This enables you to name the sounds you record and jump to them
in order to play them.
* A tape recorder buttons: Rec, Play, Pause & Stop.
* A speech button that "talks" the selection/document.
* A volume control.
There's also a new "Sound" menu when this bar is activated. It
includes:
* Sound catalog - lets you catalog the document sound by sets and play or
jump to any sound in any set (the sets are available from a pop-up menu in
the bar).
* Recorded sound quality & compression control.
* Voice settings for MacinTalk/PlainTalk.
* Playback & record options. You can record on words, sentences, etc. You
can set the activation of the recording by manually, by a key or by simply
voice activation (setting the voice activation/deactivation levels in the
voice quality DB).
I didn't get to check all those features since I find the interface
a little awkward and I didn't have the manuals (since there were no manuals
yet).
I think this covers most of the new features in the new Nisus. I'm
sure I missed some, maybe even some heavy options, but that's probably
because I didn't work with it much.
I don't know when this product is going to be released, but I now I
have a beta from march and I know that there are still problems with the
product so it might take it a little longer to come out. If you have any
other questions I'll be glad to answer them.
BTW, I'm in no way connected with Nisus Software. The opinions expressed
here are mine.

Subject: PB100 Battery lifetime?
I have a PB100, owned it less than 2 years, I have hardly used it as a
portable in all that time. Yet the battery seems to no longer hold any
charge. Ie
if it sits for a couple of days it won't even boot without being plugged
in. What is the standard life for the battery, or might I have a bigger
problem? It seems to work fine when plugged in.....and the battery does charge
according to the Battery application...

Subject: Power User CD-ROM
Does anyone out there have any experience with the Power
User CD-ROM drive?
This drive is sold by MacWarehouse for $199, and is supposed
to be double-speed (300k/sec) and Photo-CD compatible with an
access speed of 370 Ms.
This seems like a good price for this type of CD-ROM drive,
especially compared to Apple's $399 model.
Is this drive worth getting? Are there any compatibility
problems with any of the current crop of CD-ROM-based games?
I'd appreciate any informationn this drive - positive or negative.

I don't know if it works in a multi-zone environment, but you can try
PrintChoice, a shareware found on sumex and elsewhere.
PrintChoice puts a menu item on the first line of the Apple Menu with
a sub-menu list of all your pre-defined printers. Just select the one
you like to use from there - no need to go to the chooser.

Hello,
I am having problems consistently while quitting from Zterm on my LCIII.
The program works great except when I try and use the 'Command-Q' keyboard
shortcut to quit. This hangs up the whole machine, and the only way out is
to do a force-quit. (Command/Option/Escape). Has anyone else had this
problem? I've tried a fresh copy of Zterm, no luck there, and reinstalled
the System, etc.
Does anyone know how to help?

Most of these Macs have switching power supplies and they should be able to
eat just about any kind of power input. Maybe the spikes from the SCRs on
your inverter are causing a problem with the switching power supply control
circuitry. The solution might be to smooth the spikes. You could try a
better quality inverter for use with just the Mac, get a UPS that does line
conditioning or get a 1 to 1 isolation transformer that will tend to smooth
out your sine wave from the inverter.
If you wish, I have a scope you could borrow to monitor your supply voltage
and see what is going into your Mac.

Subject: SuperATM Conflicts with Network Connection? Help!
I would appreciate some help with the following problem:
A few weeks ago, we connected my Mac IIci to a Token Ring network using the
Apple 4/16MB Token Ring card and Apple's own Token Ring driver software. We
also installed MacTCP and the other networking goodies we needed. When I
tried to use my new network connection, I discovered that the Network control
panel had been corrupted, and the Token Ring control panel couldn't "see" the
Token Ring card. As a result, no networking.
Using a (long!) process of elimination, I found that I had to de-install ATM
3.6 (SuperATM) and re-install all the networking software to get everything
to work. Just turning off font substitution, or turning off SuperATM in the
control panel, didn't help. Without SuperATM, my network connection works
just dandy.
I finally installed an older version of ATM (2.0.3), which seems to behave
itself just fine, but I would like to go back to SuperATM. However, this
network connection is more important.
I have vague recollections of reading about network problems caused by
SuperATM's polling a network for illegal copies of itself. Anyone have
additional details?
Any advice or additional information would be much appreciated. I've had no
success getting any answers out of Adobe thus far.
Thanks in advance for any help! Please respond directly to the e-mail
address below, and I'll summarize for the net if there's sufficient interest.

Subject: SURGE ARREST
What's the scoop on surge protectors these days? Do the more
expensive ones really provide better protection, or would I
be wasting my money? Jack O'Leary
I just bought a APC Surge Arrest. The product is very well built. It includes a
plug for my modem. They have eveything from low cost models to very expensive
battery systems. They have a catalog that you can get at (800) 800-4APC in
U.S.
In Canada, the product is sold by MISCO in Ontario at a very good price.
For example, suggested retail price U.S. for my product is 59.95$ and I paid
68$
canadian. Shipping is low cost. (800) 661-6472 in Canada. They have a fine
catalog too covering every possible accessories. They even speak French!
With the summer coming and all the electrical storms I think I did a good
investment. Also there is a protection up to 25000$ U.S. if a system plugged on
a APC Surge Arrest or any other specified APC product, is burned. The warranty
is very specific and you have to read it to know exactly what you get.

David,
For starters, try Enigma 2.3.2 It does what you want and more. It
should be available at most big mac ftp sites (like sumex - email me if you
can't find it - I'll send you archie search results... ) It is freeware,
and implements a limited version of DES. A full DES version is available
for $15 - but ONLY within the U.S. (Encryption software above a certain
level is considered munitions and is illegal to export)

Just tried out some Yamaha YST-M10 speakers on my Mac, expecting
great things. Every time I hook them up, the left speaker keeps cutting
out. I cannot believe it is the cable; fiddling with the plugs (which run
in and out of the right speaker) cuts the left side in and out. I have

I cannot get stereo out of these stereo speakers.
Has anyone else had similar problems with these speakers?
Can anyone recommend stereo speakers at about the same price range
($80) that deliver acceptable sound and actually work?
Many thanks in advance...

From: "Charles A. Patrick" <patrcha@statcan.ca>
I have two queries.
Query 1:
Very recently I was able to get my hands on the Colour StyleWriter for part
of a day.
First I connected it directly to my PowerMac, via the printer port, and
played with it. I printed a number of pictures using SuperPaint and
IntelliDraw. I was very impressed with the results, but bear in mind that
this was my first exposure to a colour printer! This initial test took
about an hour.
Then I connected it to an SE30, again via the printer port, in another
office. Again it worked fine when run from the SE30 directly. However when
I went back into my office and tried to print from my PowerMac, using the
advertised printer sharing facility, it was no go. I spent the rest of the
afternoon unsuccessfully trying to figure out what was wrong.
When my friendly dealer representative arrived to retrieve the machine, I
recounted my tale of woe, and he promised to check into it. Earlier today I
was provided with the gen.
First, the sharing facility only works with LocalTalk. My impeccable source
tells me that a new version of the driver, which is available on AppleLink
and which he will download for my benefit soon, allows the sharing facility
to work with EtherTalk. In the course of this conversation I also learned
some other interesting (at least to me) pieces of information: The
StyleWriter II and the colour StyleWriter are directly (ie. without
recourse to the Grey sharing device) usable on a LocalTalk Network. This
last was a surprise to me, since I recall some exchanges on the net
bemoaning some aspects of the performance of the Grey sharing software. I
also specifically asked whether this meant that I could access the printer
on EtherNet using EtherPrint, or the like, and was told that that I could.
Could someone confirm this?
Query 2:
I am considering acquiring one of those dinky label printers for use by our
office. As with the colour printer above I would need to be able to put it
on the network to be accessed by all. I am just beginning to look into what
is available and have already discovered that most of the three or four
choices available are not even LocalTalk compatible, and their prices are
certainly not dinky.
I would appreciate hearing about any experiences with one or more of these
devices.
Thanks.
